Harborough travelled across the chilly border into Cambridgeshire to be hosted by Peterborough RFC, a friendly welcome awaited them from the hosts with their expansive grounds and developing site. It appears to be a club making progress, good to see ...
Anyway, back to the rugby. As charitable as we may be about the hosts, that didn't extend to the field of play. Whilst the other pitches were used for the winter sport of touch rugby, with the winter sun failing to defrost them sufficiently, the under 12's were treated to the first team pitch which although still firm was considered ok to play. Visiting parents were quick to occupy the home dugout, akin to a greenhouse protecting them from the wind!
In the first match, Harborough scored from the first play, a delightful team try saw the ball passed across the team to free up Max Fletcher to step the final defender and score in the corner. Harry Slaughter soon added a second. In another team move, Ned Corry added the third then Slaughter bagged another. Ollie Bunce finished off another team move, sniping through to score for a 5:0 half time lead. In the second half, Laurence Adediran touched down following a strong run through the defence and Bunce and Slaughter each scored to secure a convincing win.
In the second game, Peterborough broke along the right wing to score in the corner and take the lead. Bunce levelled soon after. In the second half Harborough scored a couple more, including one for Bunce to secure the win.
It was bitterly cold and the players from both teams did well to handle the ball as well as they did.
