Harborough Girls welcomed Ampthill at the weekend in conditions that were highly favourable for running rugby. With both sides depleted in numbers, due to divisional commitments, the 11-a-side game further contributed to what turned out to be an expansive game of rugby.
From the outset, the Harborough Forwards secured quick ball, which the Backs put to excellent use. Slick hands saw great distribution to the Wingers (Hannah J & Lauren) who both scored 2 excellent tries each. Cassie also made great use of the lion’s share of possession and her strong running from deep in her own half was rewarded with an excellent try. At the break, Harborough had secured a commanding lead (25-0).
The second of the 3 ‘halves’ turned out to be more of an arm wrestle. Ampthill picked up their game and their bigger Forwards certainly put Harborough under more pressure. However, the tackling was solid and Ampthill were unable to break through the Harborough defence. In contrast to the first half, this period of play saw no tries.
In the final 3rd of the afternoon, Harborough once again showed their skills to great effect. Olivia, as imperious as ever around the pitch, scored an excellent try and conversion. Harborough's scoring was rounded off by Rosie who was dominant in the loose throughout the whole game and was too strong for the Ampthill defence. Ampthill kept battling on to the end and scored a deserved consolation try before the Final Whistle. Final Score = 37-5.
A great result from all the Team, captained by Hannah W and consisting of:
