Market Harborough V Kettering: A Thrilling Home Opener

Market Harborough kicked off their home season with a spirited and exhilarating victory over local rivals Kettering at a sun-drenched Northampton Road. The pitch was in pristine condition, setting the stage for a match that promised excitement from the outset.
The game began at a frenetic pace, with Kettering’s sharp backs exploiting space, particularly through their full-back Evan Wyatt. The visitors capitalised on their early dominance with a try, taking a 0-7 lead. Harborough’s defence held firm for the first twenty minutes, with Pat Grady and Tom Herman making crucial tackles. Gradually, the Black Cats began to assert themselves. A dynamic break by the backs, coupled with the formidable strength of captain Joseph Lafferty, led to Harborough’s first try, which Lafferty converted to level the score at 7-7 after 31 minutes. As half-time approached, Harborough’s backs orchestrated another break, releasing Will Marriot to score in the corner, although the conversion was unsuccessful. Ending the first half 12-7, Harborough had a solid foundation to build upon.

The second half opened up, with Kettering scoring again from a kick into Harborough’s 22, though the conversion was missed, leaving the score at 12-12. A penalty against Harborough allowed Kettering to edge ahead 12-15. However, this would be the last time Kettering troubled the scoreboard.

Harborough responded with determination. The forwards and backs combined to send hooker Harley Williams over in the corner. Soon after, Shea Harley left the field with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Jack Digby. Digby’s return brought immediate impact, as the Harborough forwards began to dominate the scrum. Two powerful drives forced penalties, and from the second, Jack Brown crossed the line, with Lafferty adding the extras to make it 24-15.

The match grew increasingly intense, with yellow cards issued to Tom Herdman and Kettering’s number 8, reducing the teams to fourteen players each. Joe Hill made strategic substitutions, including bringing on Sam Bullock for Herdman. Kettering received another yellow card, and Harborough capitalised with a slick backline move. Joe Liggins orchestrated the play from ten, releasing Jack Wilson to finish with flair in the corner. Lafferty’s conversion extended the lead to 31-15. Harborough maintained possession, driving deep into Kettering’s half, before referee Mr Louis Massarella blew for No Side.

In a true team effort, all 18 Harborough players contributed to this well-earned victory over a competitive Kettering side. Mason Blyth was deservedly named Man of the Match. Looking ahead, the Black Cats will travel to Peterborough next week, while the 2nd XV face Oadby Wyggs in a friendly, and the Colts host Coleville at home. Additionally, at 2pm, Tigers Under 21’s will take on Harlequins Under 21’s at Northampton Road.
