The early exchanges were fairly even, with both sides struggling to hit a rhythm on a wet and dreary morning. The Rugby pack was powerful and comfortably winning their ball in the set piece. Will Hallam started the scoring for Harborough with a try under the posts to give himself a straightforward conversion. The tally was soon doubled with Cameron Jordan forcing his way over the line from five metres out.
The pressure was all Harborough’s, but Rugby managed to keep them out. Some strong runs from Henry Ingram and Max Dalby on the wings and Martin Redmond in the centre kept the defence occupied. The forwards were driving powerfully in the loose with Will Nijjer capitalising on his second burst to place the ball intelligently over the line. Hallam converted again to make the half time score 0 – 21.
A number of changes at half time meant the whole squad got some game time, and the scores kept coming. Offensive defence from Huw Davies and a tremendous run by James Melody saw him rewarded for his game-long support and hard work.
The backs combined for the next try, with a scintillating finish by Keiran Silcott, who used his speed, guile and strength to beat the defence. The last try of the day went to Dan Allen with his debut in the centre capping a fine second half performance.
Despite all their efforts, Rugby were not able to threaten the Harborough try line and the game ended at 0 - 38 to the visitors. This was a stern test for Harborough’s resolve against committed opposition; their focus was rewarded with the win.
