Harborough under 13’s travelled to Oakham for a friendly opening match and were rewarded with a closely fought contest. Harborough dominated the territory but failed to capitalise due to Oakham’s strength in the scrum and at the rucks.
It was a charge from Harborough’s Henry Povoas which resulted in the first try of the match. Despite a try saving tackle by Mathew Stamp, the home side broke for the line and following a successful conversion were able to take the lead.
Harborough responded with some strong running which saw play back into Oakham’s half. Tom Pope made good the work between the forwards and backs with a try in the corner to regain the lead at half time.
The lead changed again early in the second half as Oakham took full advantage of Harborough’s slow response to a penalty. A fine interception by Ross Primrose redressed the score line by allowing Povoas to score his second which he quickly followed with a third try after some determined running and quick passes.
Oakham continued to move the ball and were able to break through Harborough’s defence to score their third and what proved to be their final try thanks to Mark Stribling’s strong tackle which stopped Oakham heading for the line. The final score was 20 to 17 in Harborough’s favour.
