MHRUFC: Joe, how has this years pre season played out?
Joe Hill : Pre season has been very positive.
After a slow start against last year's champions Lutterworth we've grown our intensity and physicality. The games have been very pleasing, mainly due to the mentality that the lads consistently applied. This was typified by the performance against a very professional Oundle outfit. On the surface they looked very strong, however the mentality we showed, developed by our individual and collective character, at times dominated them physically.
On Saturday we travelled to Nuneaton, who play in the league above and came away with a very creditable 26-21 victory.
The aim is to continue on the trajectory we are on, which builds on last season. We've got to challenge every team we play, to a level we are very happy with.
MHRUFC: Are there any changes to report in your coaching team?
Joe Hill: We had a few meetings at the back end of last season identifying a few areas that we want to develop. With Rich Bowden moving on, it made me really think about evolving multiple areas, with the aim of moving up a level from last year.
Our coaching group has grown: Jack Brown as Director of Rugby. I keep the Head Coach role, and Chris 'Balo' Bale is our senior assistant coach. We've got Matt Armstrong/Will Leebrook and Tom Whitely as assistant coaches. It's a strong set up.
Our current players , Monty Maule is over seeing attack and San Blades is coaching the scrum.
MHRUFC: What about your leadership groups within the club?
Joe Hill:The triangulated leadership groups are as follows: 1st team captain Monty Maule, Vice Captains - Jack Burrows and Sam Staff.
The 2nd team captain is Shea Harley, VC's Tom Conneely and Jacob Owen. It has been Balo and I for a while so bringing in fresh eyes, thoughts and ideas is integral for our growth.
MHRUFC: How's training going to be structured into the new season?
Joe Hill: We are changing the format of midweek training, to further engage and promote personal development. Tuesday will be split into 3 targeted sessions for individual improvement with Thursday working on team plays and structures.
MHRUFC: What are you're thoughts on the home game opener against Northampton Old Scouts on Saturday.
Joe Hill: We had two great games against Old Scouts last season, they were relatively close and I can't see it being much different on Saturday. They were at the top end of the table last season and they'll be looking to take the next step.
However, we've got to believe in our processes and game plan. As long as we're effective in our defence and combative at the breakdown, that will allow us to launch our attacks and get the scoreboard ticking over.
I look forward to seeing all our supporters at Northampton Road at the weekend.
