Harborough Rugby Club (formerly Kibworth Rugby Club) is sad to report the death of former player and 1st Team manager Mick Freer.

Mick really took the club forward in the early 1990's, from Monday night team selection to game time on matchday's, he was ever present, organising and managing the senior teams. We will always be indebted to him for his commitment to the rugby club
- Club Chair Jon Stamp

Mick started his playing days at Welland Park School and then played for Kibworth Rugby Club in the early 1950's.

Mick made his Leicester Rugby Club debut in 1956 v Rugby and went on to play for Leicester until 1965, where a shoulder injury, against Loughborough Colleges, ended his rugby career. He played over 203 games for Leicester, scoring 15 tries and 7 drop goals. He scored 2 drop goals in one match against Newport, at Rodney Parade in February 1960, a rare feat. He was described as one of a group of talented fly-halves at the club over that period.

Mick also played for Leicestershire, Leicestershire Police, R.A.F. Bomber Command and Leicester Thursday.

Club member Sulwyn Morris remembers Mick returning to the club as a player in both 1st and 2nds at Gores Lane. A wonderful rugby player and a great organiser.

When the club moved to Northampton Road, Mick took over the 1st Team Manager duties overseeing a successful period in the club's history with players such as Lennie Newman, Chris Locker, Barry Burgess, Willy Fox, Mark Ellis, Barry Clarke, Bobby Hopper, Neil Fraser, Robin Blades, Nick and Rich Allsopp, Tex Heaver, Mark Murray and Paul Larkin donning the black shirt of Kibworth Rugby Club.

Former 1st Team Captain - Phil Jarvis said "Mick was a real driving force for the club in the 1990's and spent many hours attracting players and managing the 1sts. Mick could be sparky, but he was always interested in what was best for the club, he showed real dedication to our cause".
