A hastily arranged fixture, after the mornings cancellations, saw Market Harborough 2nds draw at Northampton Old Scouts.

With all games cancelled due to waterlogged pitches, it looked like Six Nations viewing was the order of the day. However, a late team cry-off at Old Scouts gave Harborough the opportunity to put together a team to travel to Northampton.

The organised training session behind the Air Cadet building turned into a game at Old Scouts. Players from the 1sts, 2nds and 3rds rallied to the call from skipper George Lee.

On arrival the visitors found the pitch firm if a little tacky but perfectly playable. Harborough kicked off with the cool stiff breeze and bright sunshine in their favour. The early skirmishes resulted in good field position and Adam Ball crossed over in the corner after 5 minutes. Old Scouts struck back with a swift turn of speed from the home team winger.

The game ebbed to and fro until Ed Sumpter scored his now customary solo try breaking from midfield and outflanking the defence. Joe Caunt, George Lee and Tom Dyke kept pushing Harborough forward but by half time Scouts had evened the score to 10-10.

After half time Michael Woodford powered through to score, the home team defence bouncing off his determined and strong running. Billy Blair knocked over the conversion and Harborough led 17-10. Harborough never managed to get more than one score in front and Scouts were always dangerous on the counterattack. With the scores level at 17-17, the impressive Andy Jarvis broke through in centre midfield to run in from 30 metres. Billy Blair converted and Harborough led 24-17.

The script meant it was Old Scouts time to score and they duly obliged and with the scores level at 24-24 it was the home team who should have gone on to win. Harborough seemed to run out of steam and Old Scouts were about to cross the whitewash when Adam Ball's try saving tackle caused the Scouts centre to knock the ball on.

The final whistle closed a close fought game between two evenly matched sides.
