Harborough's young guns gave a valiant performance against a strong Vipers pack. The early exchanges went to the home side who scored two quick tries to take a 12-0 lead. However, Harborough's lighter pack were stronger at scrum time, but failed to produce quick enough ball at ruck and maul.
Vipers were quick off the mark around the fringes and Harborough's lack of quick and front foot ball put their backline under pressure.
On half an hour after several thrusts towards the try line Iain Barnett's outstretched arm secured the visitor's first try. Henry Davis converted. Half time 12-7
Shortly after half time Harborough drew level at 12-12 when playing against the wind Sam Blades dummied and ran in from 10 metres. Just when it looked as though Harborough would gain the ascendancy some indifferent tackling let Vipers centre and scrum half through for two quick scores.
At 24-12 to the home team, the visiting youngsters were in danger of loosing their way, but they knuckled down and Lawrence Plant, Sam Blades and Ed Prowse powered into the Vipers defence. Plant broke through after some great phase play and Davis converted. At 24-19 Harborough had a number of chances to draw level but Vipers held firm.
Harborough were a little guilty of not playing enough 'heads up' rugby and not getting the ball quickly to their wide players. They can however be extremely proud of their commitment and organisation. Chris Merlane and Iain Barnet put in splendid eye catching performances.
