U12 at Richmond Festival

Caroline Miller26 Mar 2013 - 19:51

On a wet and rainy day under the coaching lead of West, James and Evans a mixed ability squad of Under 12’s travelled to Richmond in Surrey to take part in their festival.

The first game against the hosts ‘A’ team was a very even match with Harborough denied a try by only inches through fly half, Sam Eveleigh after good work by the forwards through Henry Smith and Ollie Hill . It was therefore disappointing to concede a try just before half time after a couple of missed tackles. The second half was equally well contested with first Ben Richards and then Harvey Clarke denied tries by only inches and then to compound this Richmond scored again to send Harborough to a 10 – 0 defeat which although seemed harsh it certainly sent the message that all scoring opportunities must be taken.

With pitch conditions deteriorating to that resembling a mud bath, Harborough’s normal game of moving the ball through the backs was proving hard to implement but in the second game against Esher, Harborough were on top for the whole game and it was no surprise that Eveleigh was on hand to splash down to give Harborough the lead. More good play and tackling from Hannah West and Ted Brown gave Eveleigh the chance to tough down again in front of all the travelling Harborough parents, the only problem was that the referee was unsighted and didn’t give the score! It mattered not as Harborough won 5 – 0.

The 3rd match against Beaconsfield saw Harborough on the back foot for most of the game but protected their try line vigorously through great tackling by Eveleigh supported by Alex Delaney, Harry Glynn and Matthew Priestley. However, the pressure eventually told and the Harborough line was breeched which resulted in a 5 – 0 defeat.

Against Beaconsfield in their final game Harborough seemed to be getting the hang of the extremely muddy conditions and after a storming run by Ben Holland it was left to Thomas Manz to pick up from the base of a maul and crash over the line from short range. However Beaconsfield hit back and it was only the combined efforts of Rhys Cook and Harvey Clarke, in a try saving tackle that prevented an equalising score. Harborough were unable to repeat the act a few moments later as Beaconsfield rumbled over to level things at half time. In the second half Harborough spent much of the time camped on their own try line but after continual good work in the line out from “the tower” Ben Evans they were able to clear their lines through clearing kicks through Glynn and Eveleigh. This calm defensive work enabled Harborough to achieve a much deserved draw 5-5.
A really good rugby experience was enjoyed by all the boys and parents in atrocious conditions many thanks to all the coaches and can we please have some better weather at Banbury next week!!
